Incorporating BOTOX® Into Your Regular Beauty Routine

Beauty is a very important aspect of many of our lives, and the data backs it up. The United States leads the world in beauty and personal care sales, with 89.5 billion dollars spent in 2018 alone. So when you’re deciding on a skincare regimen, there’s no excuse for not finding one that works for many people — such as BOTOX®.

Dr. Javier Zelaya and our staff at Skinworks Dermatology have the skills and expertise to help you decide which beauty treatments will work for you. Both BOTOX and dermal fillers are popular nonsurgical choices that we offer in our offices in Maspeth, Chelsea, and South Slope, Brooklyn, New York. Read on to see if BOTOX is the right complement for your beauty needs.

What happens to our skin with age

As we get older, our skin changes due to many factors, such as stress, lifestyle, diet, and weather. The body loses the fat just under the skin, and the muscles close to the face become more apparent. As a result, the skin stretches and wrinkles. Creases also become more pronounced.

Thankfully, BOTOX and dermal fillers can help make the skin fuller and look younger.

What you need to know about BOTOX and dermal fillers

You’ve no doubt heard of BOTOX as a very popular, minimally invasive anti-aging treatment. So how does it work? Through a series of injections of botulinum toxin, it blocks signals to localized muscles in targeted areas of the face. The wrinkles in the affected area relax and soften as a result, giving your skin a smoother appearance. BOTOX is commonly used to minimize wrinkles, lift your cheeks, chin, jawline, and make your lips look fuller.

Dermal fillers work similarly to BOTOX but involve an injection of a different substance, such as calcium hydroxylapatite and hyaluronic acid. A few of the most popular types of dermal fillers are Sculptura, Radiesse, and Juvederm.

The process for either procedure usually only takes about 15 minutes and causes minor discomfort. You will need to stop taking aspirin or any anti-inflammatory medications at least two weeks beforehand. It is also best to avoid alcohol a week before the procedure.

What to expect afterward

When your procedure is done, you can expect to see the best results in about 1-2 weeks. Temporary bruising in the treated areas is not unusual, and headaches can happen and last for 1-2 days but are rare. The effects of the treatment will last up to six months, so often you will have multiple treatments.
